Joe Sam Owen has practiced on the Mississippi Gulf Coast since 1972, and has long handled product liability cases. Our automobile defect cases have included:
- Roof crush/crashworthiness cases (Toyota SUV rollover accident)
- Airbag failure and airbag injuries
- Defective tires (blowouts leading to rollover accidents)
- Seatbacks and seatbelts
Take A Look At Our Representative Cases
In the Ford F-150 case, our client was involved in a minor “fender bender,” a low-speed crash that should not have triggered the airbags. But the driver’s airbag inflated and struck our client in the chest with such force that it ruptured his aorta and killed him. On behalf of the family, Mr. Owen settled that wrongful death case two weeks into the trial.
In another case, we won substantial damages for a local teacher who was paralyzed after her airbag deployed in a crash. Being a smaller woman, the bag struck her at head level, breaking her neck rather than cushioning the impact.
Our groundbreaking lawsuit and others that followed led Ford to redesign the deployment mechanism and eventually to create “smart” airbags that adjust to the weight of the person and speed of the vehicle. It’s rewarding to know that we are helping prevent future rollover accidents and injuries, but these are complex and expensive cases. Owen & Owen has the resources to hire the accident reconstruction and engineering experts to prevail on behalf of our clients.
